Blog 8: How green are you?

Maybe I'm not so green but I love nature since I was a child. Always my family teaches me to respect the nature and take care of it, especially regarding the great problems that exist in the world with the contamination today.
My house in Santiago has always been surrounded with green (trees, grass, and different kinds of plants) but not only in order to decorate but also in order to home consume of fruits like peaches or oranges.

I think people have not learnt about environmentally friendly practices because there are no clear public politics or incentives measures like recycling. However, also is true that in JGM has had a strong incentive to recycling in all its places. Also where I live in Rancagua is installed a lots deposits for plastic bottles. In my case, I try to use my legs every time especially in the city, though I would like to use my bycicle that I have in my house in Rancagua.

I don't have joined or supported any eco-organizations mainly because I believe that our society has bigger problems than recycling. But I also believe that the goverment or even the communities could do more efforts in order to create public policies for recycling. For example they can set up certain areas for recycling where the people could put their glass/plastic/metal wastes apart from the other trash or they can implement measures for reforesting or create more green areas.

Blog 11: Language Challenges

Particularly I think that the subject of English in the University is a great instance to practice the language in different modalities as listening, speaking, writing or reading. In this way I highlight the fact of having this subject, because it has helped me to develop skills for a better usage of the English, especially in other subjects of my career that use bibliography in this language. In the case of the blogs has been very useful for knowing about of words or expressions that before I ignored. Likewise the blogs has helped me for putting in practice what I have learnt in terms of the vocabulary.
Moreover I have to improve my English mainly en the speaking. In many cases, at the time of speaking, I have clear a general idea about that I want to say in English, but when effectively I want to say that in English, to appearing within of my mind many words and finally they confuse me, and I ended saying unnecessary inconsistencies. But it’s something that I must to improve with a greater clarity and organization mental.
Outside the English class I have strengthened my English through the articles and texts that I have to read in my career, so the reading has been easier for practicing and reinforcing. Furthermore other advantage is that the bibliography that I read is concerning to my academic sphere, thus it will be more useful in the future, especially with the technical language.

I’m aware about the relevance of the English in the real life. So I regard that one of the things that I’m more interested is in learning English.

Blog 10: Good and bad points

While this year 2013 still not end, I have had good and sad moments that definitely had marked me, either negative or positively. Within the good things I highlight to have met to new people, especially in the University, that even now I regarded like my friends. Likewise for me is important to stand out the great rapprochement that my class of Third of Archaeology has had in the last time, to the point of creating a good atmosphere between us. This situation contrasts completely with the last year when my class was fragmented in a lot groups.
Unfortunately not all is good in the life and this I experienced when my grandmother died in September. Obviously it was a complicated moment for me and my family, especially because I was living with her since I changed my residence to Santiago, when I joined to the University in 2010.
About my achievements in this year I highlight the experience that I have been gained within of Archaeology, where I have gotten more knowledge through of the different subjects that I have completed. But I think that the true reflexion about my achievements I’m going to do in the end of the year.
In this moment I only want to finish the academic year with all of my subjects approved and to enjoy my holidays. About the things that I didn’t, I would like to come back in the time and to fix some situations that now affected me, but this is impossible and only I have to go on with my life.  We still have a month and half ahead of us, and we don’t know what will happen…

Blog 9: Forest Fires

In this blog I’m going to write about the forest fires in the Fifth Region, especially in the zone of Viña del Mar.  Accordingly with the main sources of information, the fire began yesterday in the afternoon in the zone of Chorrillos, and the latest news indicates that the fire has affected to seven houses. Regarding this dramatic situation, the ONEMI has declared red alert for the emergency that also include to other fires near to the Route 68. The job of the firefighters have been very complicated due to factors like the wind or the topography of the place where is concentrated the fire. At the moment, many families have been evacuated of the place and many other have seen affected with the electric service.
Clearly this disaster corresponds to human action and affect not only to the nature but also to the society itself. Indeed, this situation remembers me a similar event happened the last summer in Valparaiso where the irresponsibility of some people made a great fire that affected to hundreds of families. Evidently the frequency of these developments indicates us that the people have not still taken environmental awareness, nor have a concern for the rest of the society that finally pays the tragic consequences. Is for this reason that is necessary to continue and intensify the prevention campaigns with the objective of achieving the maximum reduction of forest fires, especially if we consider that the summer is coming and the heat increases.

Blog 7: to Brazil 2014

In this blog I’m going talk in about the classification of Chile to the next World Cup in Brazil 2014. The last Tuesday the Chilean team played against Ecuador, in a match that would define to the coming classified to Brazil 2014. At the same time, Uruguay played against Argentina with less possibility to classify directly, but with the hope intact. The match in Santiago was very intense since it appearance, with Chile attacking strongly with players like Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas, while Ecuador had the speed of players like Antonio Valencia and Jefferson Montero. Finally the match finished with a result very close, 2-1, and the classification of both teams. Simultaneously the streets of the Chilean cities began to fill with euphoric people and the celebrations started. Particularly I watched in the news the great bash in Plaza Italia and I could to see the fireworks shows in lots points of the city. Inevitable those celebrations remember me the same happiness that I lived in 2009 when also Chile classified against Colombia for the World Cup in South Africa. In that opportunity I remember that I went with my school friends to celebrate to the main square in Rancagua until the next day. Obviously I only remember that I was drunk. But now I couldn’t to celebrate because I had an important test the next day.

Blog 6: ancient wine in Israel

In this blog I’m going to write a summary about news that appeared the last Friday 22 November in the paper online “The guardian”, and whose title is “Ancient wine found on jars unearthed from 3,700-year-old cellar in Israel”. This article talks about a new discovery in the ruins of Canaanite palace in Israel, where the archaeologists revealed the existence of the 3,700-year-old wine cellar. Likewise the archaeologists have discovered, through chemical analysis, wine-making techniques.
On the other hand the experts have inferred from the ceramics jars that the wine was a luxurious beverage for specials events like banquets.
Particularly the researchers found this wine cellar near of the town Nahariya in Northern Israel, where they found 40 jars (each one with a capacity to store 60 litres). From this discovery, the archaeologists think that may be more wine stored elsewhere, but the amount found wouldn’t be enough to supply the local population, because it was reserved for palace use.
About the content of the jars, the researchers think that it would have held red and possibly white wine. In this point, Patrick McGovern said that the discovery give to the archaeologists new information about the development of winemaking in ancient Canaan, from which it later spread to Egypt and across the Mediterranean. Now he suggest that is necessary to determinate the ingredients of this wine.
